HDPE Pond Liners in Kenya: Sizing, Welding and Anchoring
How to size, weld and anchor an HDPE pond liner for a Kenyan fish pond, with 0.5mm and 1.0mm liner prices plus cage net, cover net and aeration costs.

Two questions come up almost every time someone lines their first pond: how many metres do I buy, and is 0.5mm thick enough? Both have straightforward answers, once the hole is measured properly.
Work out the liner size before you price anything
A liner is not the size of the pond floor. It runs down the walls, across the bottom, back up the far wall, and past the crest into an anchor trench. For a rectangular pond, working outwards from the floor:
- Liner length = pond floor length + (2 x wall slope length) + (2 x anchor allowance)
- Liner width = pond floor width + (2 x wall slope length) + (2 x anchor allowance)
Take a smallholder pond of 20m x 10m at the top, 1.5m deep, with 0.5m of anchor allowance each side. If the walls were vertical, the floor is also 20m x 10m and the slope length is simply the depth: 24m long, 14m wide, so 336 square metres. Two things change that in practice.
Sloped walls change both numbers at once. Almost every earth pond in Kenya is dug with a batter of around 1:1.5 so the walls do not collapse in the long rains. The wall face is then longer than the pond is deep, roughly 2.7m along the face at 1.5m deep. But the floor is smaller than the top, because each wall eats about 2.25m off the top measurement. On the same pond the floor is nearer 15.5m x 5.5m, and the liner works out at roughly 21.9m x 11.9m, about 261 square metres. So measure the floor, and run a tape down the actual slope rather than using the vertical depth. Sizing off the top measurement and the depth, as in the first sum, leaves you margin rather than leaving you short, but you pay for that margin.
Seams need overlap. Unless the roll in stock is wider than your pond, you will be joining panels. Ask for the roll width held when you order, count the panels needed across the short axis, then add overlap at every join.
Microns, and what 0.5mm actually buys you
Thickness is quoted two ways in Kenya and both mean the same thing. One millimetre is 1,000 microns, so the 0.5mm liner is a 500 micron sheet and the 1.0mm liner is 1,000 micron.
HDPE Pond Liner 0.5MM is the usual specification for a well prepared earth pond that holds water year round and is not walked on much. Specify HDPE Pond Liner 1.0MM when any of the following is true:
- the base is murram, or holds stones or coral rag you cannot fully remove, common along the coast
- the pond is drained and refilled between cycles, so the liner sees sun and handling repeatedly
- staff will be wading, seining or dragging harvest gear across the floor
- it is an irrigation reservoir or water pan that must also survive livestock near the edge
The step from 0.5mm to 1.0mm adds about 80 per cent to the liner line on your quote, from a listed KSh 275 to KSh 500. On a pond that will run for years that is usually the cheaper decision, because relining means draining, restocking and losing a production cycle.

Both liners are listed per unit rather than by roll size, so confirm the roll width held and how your cut is quoted before you turn square metres into a total.
Preparing the base
Most liner failures are base failures: something under the sheet pushed through.
Clear everything sharp. Stones, coral fragments, roots, maize stalks and old termite workings all come out. Roots keep growing and will find their way through a 500 micron sheet.
Compact the floor and walls. Loose fill settles once the pond is full, and that settlement drags the liner down and puts tension on the welds.
Blind the surface. Sand or screened fine soil gives the liner something forgiving to sit on. This matters more on murram and rocky ground than on clay.
Check the water table. In low-lying ground near Lake Victoria, a liner over a high water table can lift and balloon the moment you drain the pond. Plan drainage first.
Work in a dry spell. Liner laid during the long rains sits on ground that settles again once it dries.
Welding the seams and anchoring the edges
Overlapping panels and weighting them down does not work. The joins must be heat welded so two sheets behave as one.
The Pondliner Lamination Machine is the tool for that, listed at KSh 100,000, and it seals both polyethylene and PVC liner. Clean the edges so no grit sits in the seam, set the correct temperature and pressure for the sheet, feed the overlapping edges through so the seam runs continuously, then inspect the full length before the liner goes in. A seam with a gritty patch or a cold section is the one that weeps later. For a single pond it is usually cheaper to hire a contractor who owns a machine.
For anchoring, cut a trench roughly 300mm wide and 300mm deep, set back about half a metre from the crest, right around the pond. Lay the liner into it, backfill and compact. That trench stops wind lifting the sheet and stops it creeping down the wall as the pond fills. Leave a little slack rather than pulling it drum tight: HDPE expands in the sun and contracts overnight, and a tight sheet puts that movement into the welds.
Lifespan, and what actually shortens it
Both liners are high density polyethylene and UV resistant, but ultraviolet light is still the main clock running against them. What fails first is what stays exposed: the freeboard strip above the waterline, and any liner left flapping outside the trench. To buy more years:
- keep the anchor trench backfilled so no edge is left loose in the sun
- cover the exposed freeboard with soil, murram or grass where the design allows
- store spare rolls in shade, never leaning against a wall in the open yard
- keep cattle and boda riders off the pond bund
- lift harvest gear rather than dragging it, and keep jembes and pangas off the floor
Keep a small offcut for repairs. A patch found early is a morning of work. A slow leak found late costs a crop.
Nets, cages and aeration around the pond
A lined pond still needs the rest of the system. Pond Cover Net is a UV-resistant mesh that keeps herons, kingfishers and other birds off your stock, and leaves and debris out of the water. Happa Net handles fry nursing and broodstock inside the main pond, and Harvesting Net does the seining at the end of the cycle.
Working cages on Lake Victoria rather than ponds, Fish Cage Net Material is KSh 45,000 for a 50m x 7m bundle, the heavy-duty PE Net 36 PLY at 30m x 5m is KSh 75,000, and HDPE Cage Bracket and Accessories, the support system for floating cages, is KSh 650,000. The netting sits under Nets in Marine & Fishing.
The Aeration Accessories · Tubing · Air Stone kit at KSh 10,500 covers 12m of tubing with six air stones and six valves, enough for a small pond or a set of tanks. Then measure: a Dissolved Oxygen Meter at KSh 25,000 tells you whether the aeration is doing its job on hot still nights, when losses happen. Both sit in Aeration & Water Quality.
What to do next
- Measure the pond floor, then run a tape down the actual wall slope, not the vertical depth.
- Add 0.5m of anchor allowance each side and calculate liner length and width.
- Choose 0.5mm or 1.0mm on base material, drain frequency, foot traffic.
- Bring those numbers in, confirm the roll width in stock, and settle whether you hire a welding machine or buy one.
- Order the cover net and aeration at the same time, so the pond is protected from day one.
